Chocolate Forteza is born from the legacy of Cortes Hermanos, a family-owned, Caribbean, chocolate manufacturing company founded in 1929. Inspired by a life surrounded by chocolate factories, markets, and cacao fields, the family’s fourth generation developed a deep passion for the “farm-to-bar” process.
The brand takes its name from the second surname of our founder, Don Pedro Cortés Forteza, paying tribute to his enduring legacy. In 2014, Forteza was created to unite nearly a century of chocolate-making expertise with a renewed commitment to the future of Caribbean cacaco.
From the beginning, Forteza has worked to strengthen Puerto Rico’s cacao ecosystem through close collaboration with local farmers and public institutions.
Through two USDA Specialty Crop Grant initiatives, we have helped subsidize the grafting of more than 22,000 high-quality cacao trees and facilitated accessible technical knowledge for growers. Working alongside agricultural agencies in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and the United States, we have supported the emergence of a new generation of producers committed to quality and sustainability.
Operating in the Caribbean requires perseverance. Despite hurricanes, earthquakes, and the global pandemic, Forteza has remained focused on elevating the value of Caribbean cacao through quality, innovation, and strong relationships across the entire value chain: from farmers to consumers.
Today, Forteza continues to balance sensory excellence with responsible sourcing practices, working toward a more resilient and sustainable cacao industry for the region.
